Some cable car rides take you to a viewpoint. The Langkawi SkyCab takes you 550 million years back in time. Soaring above the ancient rainforest of Gunung Machincang — the oldest geological formation in Southeast Asia, once submerged beneath a prehistoric sea — the SkyCab is not just a cable car ride. It is a record-breaking, UNESCO Geopark-certified journey through one of the oldest landscapes on the planet.
Recognised in the Book of Records as the Longest Free-Span Mono-Cable Car in the world, SkyCab ascends from the Base Station at Oriental Village through to the Middle and Top Stations of Gunung Machincang, reaching an elevation of over 650 metres at the Middle Station and the Top Station at 708 metres above sea level. The views encompass the entire Langkawi archipelago, the Andaman Sea, and on clear days, the distant coastline of southern Thailand.
Every standard ticket includes a round-trip cable car ride plus complimentary admission to three on-site attractions: 3D Art Langkawi, SkyDome, and SkyRex — all located at the Oriental Village base. Additional experiences like the iconic Langkawi SkyBridge, SkyGlide, and Express Lane are available as upgrades or as part of combo packages.
What competitors consistently fail to highlight: the geological significance of Machincang. The rock beneath SkyCab's cables is among the oldest exposed rock on Earth — the first land mass to rise from the ancient Tethys Sea over 550 million years ago. Riding over it is a connection to deep geological time that is genuinely unlike anything else in Malaysia, and it's a story that most visitors never even hear.
Planning a full day in Langkawi? Browse our complete list of Langkawi activities to discover what else the island has to offer alongside your SkyCab adventure.
The cable car journey itself, including time at the Top Station, typically takes 1.5 to 2 hours. Add the three complimentary ground-level attractions (3D Art Langkawi, SkyDome, and SkyRex) and allow 3–4 hours for a complete visit. If adding SkyBridge or SkyGlide, budget another 45–60 minutes.
Your adventure begins at the Base Station within Oriental Village, a traditional-style village at the foot of Gunung Machincang. Browse the shops, grab a meal at SkyBistro, or visit 3D Art Langkawi, SkyDome, and SkyRex (all complimentary with your ticket) before or after your ride. These three attractions are conveniently located at the base, making them easy to fit around your boarding slot.
Step into your chosen gondola and begin the ascent over one of the most ancient landscapes on Earth. As you rise through Machincang's UNESCO Geopark forest, watch for hornbills, langurs, and rare rainforest flora through the cabin windows. If you're in the Glass Bottom Gondola, the ancient forest floor is directly beneath your feet. At the Middle Station (approximately 650 metres), dramatic eastern cliff faces and deep forested valleys come into view. The Top Station at 708 metres delivers 360° panoramic views across the Langkawi archipelago, the Andaman Sea, and, on a clear day, southern Thailand.
From the Top Station, a short walk leads to the Langkawi SkyBridge, a 125-metre curved suspension bridge 100 metres above the rainforest canopy, with transparent glass panels along its walkway. This is one of Langkawi's most photographed landmarks. SkyBridge is not included in any standard ticket and requires a separate add-on ticket or combo package. The adjacent SkyGlide, an inclined glass elevator providing access to the bridge, also requires an extra fee.
After your descent, your complimentary ticket still covers SkyDome, SkyRex, and 3D Art Langkawi at the Oriental Village base, typically taking 45–60 minutes combined. These are family-friendly additions that round off a full SkyCab day without any additional spend.
Hovering over jungle and climbing over 550 million years old rock, SkyCab gives you more than one unique experience. Be informed, SkyCab is located at the oldest part of South East Asia and the first to emerge from the ancient sea and estuary! That’s something to give a goose bump if you can get the gist. Come and experience it yourself. The Base Station is conveniently located at the foothill of the Machincang mountain. From here, visitors will be taken up to the cool Machincang mountain via the cable car system. The ride will be an exhilarating experience for everyone to enjoy. You will also be able to catch a glimpse of the flora and fauna that surrounds the area.
