Your pre-booked timed ticket takes you straight to the entrance on Avenue René Coty, where you'll collect your audio guide headset before descending 130 steps into the former limestone quarries beneath Montparnasse. Roughly 20 metres below street level, the route opens into a dimly lit corridor network that eventually leads to the ossuary itself — chambers where the bones and skulls of around six million Parisians are stacked and arranged into walls, columns and decorative patterns, punctuated by carved inscriptions and memorial plaques. The audio commentary, available in English, French, Spanish and German, explains how the quarries were dug, why the city's overflowing cemeteries were emptied into them in the late 18th century, and what the arrangements you're walking past actually mean.
Plan for around an hour of self-guided walking covering about 2 km, finishing with a 112-step climb back to the surface. The atmosphere is quiet and reflective rather than theatrical, and the pacing is entirely yours — timed entry keeps visitor numbers low enough that you're rarely rushed. Conditions stay cool at roughly 14°C year-round with narrow, sometimes damp passages underfoot, so wear a jacket and closed shoes. There are no lifts, toilets or lockers inside, and large bags and luggage aren't permitted, so travel light and use the facilities beforehand.
Children under 2 years will be considered as infant and entry will be free of cost.
Children between age 3 to 12 will be considered as child and charged child rate.
Children above age 12 will be considered as an adult and charged adult rate.
