The National Museum of Nature and Science was established in January 1877 and is one of Japan's largest natural science museums. Its location sits on archaeological remains from Japan's Jomon, Yayoi, and Kofun periods, as well as part of the ruins of Kan'ei-ji Temple's sub-temples that were burned down during the Meiji Restoration in the late Edo period. The museum currently has five exhibition buildings.
Buildings 1 and 4 feature thematic exhibitions on biological evolution, mammalian evolution, Japan's flora and fauna, mineral geology, and human development. The other three exhibition buildings showcase the history of scientific and technological progress, displaying various measurement tools and labor implements from ancient times to the present.
